A Camp Parade
Having a parade is a way to turn what could be an ordinary day at camp into a special day. There are a number of ways to do this. If you are having a special theme day such as “Crazy Hat Day” (in which everyone wears something crazy on their heads or makes a crazy hat to wear), you can have a parade of campers and staff before a panel of judges to determine who has won in different categories. Prizes can be given for the craziest hat, ugliest hat, most colorful hat, or most unique hat.
You could assign groups of campers to make floats and provide them with crepe paper, fabric, newsprint, tempera paints, and other materials. Groups could accompany their floats with painted faces, costumes, kazoo music, drill marches, instruments, noisemakers, cheers, songs, dances, or recorded music. This makes for a great parade! You could include a judging stand for each group to pass by, competing for prizes or ribbons. Again, different categories can be used to maximize the number of winners.
Once at day camp several of us on staff, who didn’t mind getting our cars a bit messy, loaned them so that each group could decorate a car with tempora paint, crepe paper, and toilet paper. Then we had a car parade around the parking lot and a driveway that went around the building! But we had even more fun afterward with a giant car wash in which we all got wet. It was a parade to remember! It was a great camp photo op day too.
